WaterTower Brooklyn - A Sculptural Artwork

Monday

A new sculptural artwork by Brooklyn artist Tom Fruin is situated on the rooftop of 20 Jay Street and is viewable from Dumbo, the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, FDR Drive and Lower Manhattan. The monumental water tower sculpture is constructed from salvaged pieces of colorful plexiglass and steel... I tell you, one man's trash is another one's treasure. For prime viewing locations head to Brooklyn Bridge Park at Washington Street (map), and the Manhattan Bridge bike path. Isn't it just beautiful?

Chanel's The Little Black Jacket Exhibition - New York

Thursday

The Little Black Jacket Chanel exhibition landed in New York this week and for one week only!  Located in a nondescript lot at 18 Wooster St. in SoHo, I stopped in this afternoon to find Lagerfeld's photos nicely displayed despite the somewhat small space. Upon exit you have the choice of 1, 2, or 3 free poster sized prints to choose from and then rolled up into a plastic Chanel bag for you. Cool, right? If you can't make it in to the exhibit before it ends tomorrow have a look at the official The Little Black Jacket - Chanel microsite to see where it will be traveling to next. Catch it before it's gone..!

i LOVE New York

Tuesday

The LOVE pop art piece by Robert Indiana on the corner of Sixth Avenue & 55th Street has been here for years yet I'd never photographed the famous sculpture. So as an addition to The 365 Project I snapped a few shots before continuing downtown for some shopping. Anyone else visit this famous corner in Manhattan or other interesting art space? Share your pics on my FB Wall with a note!

Happy Valentine's everybody :-)

india art song

Monday

After a life-changing journey to Rajasthan, India in 2008, artist Karen Knorr wanted to celebrate the visual richness found in the fables, myths and stories of northern India using sacred and secular sites to highlight the caste system, femininity and its relationship with the animal world. Interiors of palaces, mausoleums, and holy sites were photographed with a large format camera and a variety of animals were photographed separately in sanctuaries and zoos. Knorr combined the two elements, fusing high resolution with analogue photography. The result is an impressive and spellbinding series I hope to see in person someday. (via Honestly WTF)

I Heart Street Art : Chile

Thursday

From the streets of Valparaiso to the beaches of Viña del Mar in Chile, art is all around. Keep your eyes open for the pieces that decorates some of these hidden alleys, staircases, and sand dunes... It's just a rather cheap flight away. Don't forget to visit Chilean poet Pablo Neruda's home La Sebastiana, with its expansive views over the colorful city!

The Daphne Guinness Exhibition in New York

Thursday

Yesterday I finally got the chance to visit the Museum at FIT (my university! heey) for their exhibition on the private collection of Daphne Guinness.  Phenomenal! There are so many gorgeous, glittery, sculptural pieces – many by Alexander McQueen who she was very close with, Azzedine Alaia, Lagerfeld, and some of her own creations. Guinness' style and expression go far beyond fashion and lean more toward the realm of art when seen up close. Definitely check it out if you're anywhere near NYC, you have until Jan. 7th!

I Heart Street Art : Manayunk

Tuesday

A quick day trip to Manyaunk, a small neighborhood in Philadelphia, lands you smack dab in the middle of some really cool street art. Besides already having art covering some buildings and walls, the Mural Arts Project is an additional effort to infuse this chill Philly outpost with new and innovative public art.

Delightful Nightmare in San Francisco

Thursday

I'd never heard of Czech-born Swedish artist Klara Kristalova before visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in August. I found the strangely dark yet fun and mythical work super interesting. It's like she takes the naiveté of childhood and the subconscious to create a weird balance between nightmare and delight. She engages a set of questions as to what it is you're really looking at and I can't wait to see her new exhibition when it opens here in New York next month.

What do you think of her ceramic sculptures? Too odd, intriguing, fun?

I Heart Street Art : San Francisco

Wednesday

I'm baaack! LoL.. I've been away from the blog for some weeks now so have lots to share. First thing is the sensational street art I came across in the Mission district of San Francisco. As a whole, I wasn't impressed with the city in the least, but these murals blew me away. They were so detailed and beautiful and showcased real local talent. The neighborhood itself is known for its ethnic culture, with taquerias, bakeries, and shops lining the streets.. But of course, the most 'amusing' part was when I asked a dude to take a photo of me and after much ado stands in front of the mural thinking I was asking for a photo of him.. hahaha! So I went along with it and here he is, little white cup and all, lol.

A Haunting in Iceland

Monday

This lone dress in the middle of a silent, white room was strangely haunting but at the same time so captivating. Iceland's Reykjavik Art Museum has room after room filled with art but only this one had 1 single piece. There was not another soul on the whole floor and seemed like no one in the entire building. From afar it looked like a regular dress but as I got closer I realized that it was all constructed of paper and the print was drawn entirely by hand.. in pencil! Wow..

What do you think of this paper dress?

I Heart Street Art : Buenos Aires

Tuesday

I found this block in San Telmo, Buenos Aires by accident, just walking around exploring. A turn here, a turn there and there it was. A whole strip of brightly colored art covering the walls. And there was this perfect blue door waiting for me to jump in and take a picture with. I walked away with no recollection of how to get back to this spot but luckily there was a lot more of it around every other corner. I love this town :-)
